Choose Happiness, Choose Life!: Part 1
This series of posts is designed to take a true look at the factors around the abortion movement and what it truly means to empower women and to empower them for free choice.
Abort the Pro-Choice Mission
Pro-Choice? Pro-Murder?
What is pro-choice?
According to prochoice.org “The right to choose abortion is essential to ensuring a woman can decide for herself if, when and with whom to start or grow a family.”; this narrative introduces the notion that if you are pro-life you are an “anti-choice extremist”. Still the hard fact is that we live in a culture that is producing hundreds of thousands of unwanted pregnancies. The CDC records that “Among the 49 reporting areas that provided data for 2018, a total of 619,591 and in 2020, 620,327 abortions were reported.”. This astonishing number is actually lower than numbers above 800,000 in the years between 2004 and 2008 (USAFacts.org). This is over half of a million people who are not here living with us because they were slaughtered and terminated from existence. This is over half a million babies that did not ask to be conceived and will never get a chance to experience a full life and never get to experience a life of love.
Unfortunately, the argument of a woman’s right to choose abortion continues to be a battle between pro-life and pro-abortion advocates. Some of this argument falls on the question of viability or determining the exact point that a fertilized egg (zygote) becomes a baby. Viable means capable of surviving or living successfully, especially under particular environmental conditions.
Some people believe that life starts at conception, when the sperm fertilizes the egg and just like when God created the Earth, light is introduced. “For the first time, scientists have proven that when a human egg is fertilized, it releases what are called zinc sparks. Upon fertilization, calcium increases and zinc is rapidly released. When this happens, the zinc joins itself to small, light-emitting molecule probes. In other words, it creates a microscopic flash of light.” (cbc.ca/news). We do not need the bible to tell us that light is good: “look at the bright side”, “lighten up”, “let your light shine”, “shine bright like a diamond”. The spark of light at conception/fertilization offers a spark of hope, light is good, life is good. The bible tells us that the world was formless and filled with darkness (Genesis 1: 3-4a) “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good.”. God started with the light when He created the Earth and all living creatures in it. He also starts life in the womb with the light. This flash of light, when life is created can not be replicated by scientists. When fertility doctors are working to combine eggs and sperm they cannot dictate which ones will spark (become viable); however, they can conclude which ones are most likely to succeed and grow into a fetus based on the light and brightness at conception.
Still, some people believe that life does not start until the heart beat starts at as early as 5 ½ to 6 weeks. Some believe the fertilized egg is considered a living human once the zygote attaches to the uterine wall and becomes a fetus at 4 weeks; this is when organs and body parts begin to develop. There are even some people who believe that a fetus’s life does not hold the right to life if it is not considered viable outside of the mothers womb; this enables the argument of “my body, my choice” but with medical advancements infants are able to survive prematurely at as young as 21 weeks and many states have developed strict laws to help protect the unborn babies from fatality by live deconstruction. On June 5th 2020, baby Richard born at 21 weeks, proves to the world that the age of viability is fluid and not a fair scale to determine the baby’s right to life inside of the womb. An additional notable fact is that 38 states currently have fetal homicide laws (ncls.org) which declare that the murder of a woman and her unborn baby results in two homicides.
Still, the truth is that most people are not interested in the clump of cells argument that quickly clashes with the excitement that can come from two lines on a stick or ultrasound pictures of babies or baby showers and gender reveal parties; people are more interested in a woman’s right to choose. The law states a woman does have the right to choose and the rest of this series will evaluate what leads women and families to choose abortion. The study will also focus on the fact that life is still an option and that having a choice does not have to mean choosing death and destruction. Life is good. Choose life.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10
Dear Heavenly Father, help us to seek you and to seek your love. Help us to see a miracle in each new life, at every stage, and give us strength and wisdom to protect the unborn from the evil one. LORD let your glory and mercy be shown in every new life and let love conquer all fear and worry, that Mothers will boldly bear their children; in Jesus name, amen!
